Project Description

The most complex element of this wedding was in transforming the 20,000-square-foot metal barn into an intimate and romantic space worthy of a fairy tale wedding. The barn was constructed entirely out of metal on an unfinished concrete pad. While practical, these design choices made the reception space inhospitable to a Hollywood-inspired wedding. The largest challenge – the metal ceiling – was ugly; there is simply no other way to say it. The entrant knew the soft look the bride desired simply could not be achieved without completely covering the ceiling. Standard tent liners are manufactured in metric dimensions and construction in the U.S. uses imperial dimensions. With that said, the entrant had to use innovative engineering to retrofit a white tent liner into the ceiling of the barn. When it proposed this unique idea, the entrant knew the move was risky and labor-intensive. It had never attempted such a unique customization of this scale. The company took a big chance with its approach. When it came time to install the draped tent liner, the company used 2,000 feet of wire rope to build the rigging that created the hang point at the center of the barn’s 32-foot peak. A team of 12 used scissor lifts to painstakingly install the liner piece by piece until the ceiling was completely covered. Installation took hours, but the impact of the soft ceiling was instantaneous. Combined with the other design elements in the space, it was exactly what the bride wanted.
